2d opening shows preempt in a major or balanced 19/21.
Responses:
2h pass or correct
2s pass or correct (shows weakish hand and
4+h)
2nt GF asking suit
RESPONSES BY OPENER AFTER 2H BY PD
pass my hand is weak in h
2s my hand is weak in s
2nt my hand is 19/21 balanced (all systems are on)
RESPONSES BY OPENER AFTER 2S BY PD
pass my hand is weak in s
3c my hand is weak in h and in the low range of preempt
3d my hand is weak in h and in the high range of preempt
2nt my hand is balanced 19/21 (all systems on)
Notes: after a 3c rebid by
opener which shows low range of preempt, pd,
depending on his hand, can bid: (a) 3h sign-off (b) 4h (c) 3d telling
pd he is not sure if game is there in h or not. Opener, with a tad extra
(like a void) should bid game
RESSPONSES BY OPENER AFTER 2NT GF BY PD In the sequence 2d by opener and 2nt by pd, 2nt is GF and is asking for the suit
Up to now, opener would either bid 3h or 3s, being unable to give pd the strength of the preempt.
Opener can now tell pd his suit as well as the strength of the preempt with the use of 2 previous dead bids
- 3c = max preempt in h
- 3d = max preempt in s
- 3h = min preempt in h
- 3s = min preempt in s
The purpose of 3c and 3d to show h and s respectively is to have the strng hand play in either h s or nt
2d opening frees 2h 2s and 2nt as opening bids
2h 5/5 h + any other suit, including s 5/10
Responses by pd to 2h opening
If pd cannot stand to play in 2h, he bids 2s as pass or correct. Opener
will pass if his second suit is s or correct to his minor
2nt GF asking for the other suit
2s opening 5/5 s + a minor 5/10
Responses by pd to 2s opening
If pd cannot stand to play in 2s, he bids 3c as pass or correct. Opener
will pass or correct to 3d
2nt GF asking for the minor|
In the sequence 2h/s (h+
any other suit; or s+minor 5/5) and a 2nt bid by pd which is gf and asking for the other suit, opener will rebid his other suit just as before. And here pd begins a question asking sequence
2h 2nt 3d 3h (by pd) Here pd has
established the trump suit and is asking opener where is his single or void.
I opener is 553 opener would rebid the higher suit to show a void in the higher suit:
- 2h 2nt 3d 3h 4h (void in s)
- 2h 2nt 3d 3h 4d (void in c)
- 2h 2nt 3c 4c 4h (void in s)
- 2h 2nt 3c 4c 5c (void in d)
- 2s 2nt 3d 3s 4s (void in h)
- 2s 2nt 3d 3s 4d (void in c)
etc etc etc
If opener is 5521 opener would show his single by bidding that suit
- 2h 2nt 3d 3h 3s (single s)
- 2h 2nt 3d 3h 4c (single c)
etc etc etc
Notice that all these sequences keep the bidding safely at game level in the established suit.
2nt opening Preempt in either c or d
Responses by pd to 2nt opening
3c pass or correct
3nt to play
3h/s non forcing
After a 2nt opening bid, which shows a preempt in d or c, pd can take advantage of the dead 3d bid and use it to find out if there is a 5/3 major fit. 3d by responder is GF.
Responses by opener:
3H=3 spades
3S=3 hearts
3NT=no 3 cards major
4C=33 in majors with club shortage
4D=33 in majors with diamond shortage
Pd must be careful to have a stopper in the other minor, in case opener rebids 3nt.
The purpose of having
the h and s responses reversed is to have the strong hand play
- 2nt opening now frees 3d and 3c as opening bids
3c opening 5/5 minors 5/10
3d opening weak preempt in h or s (KTxxxxx)
3h opening strong preempt in h (good suit with 2 of top 3 honors)
3s
opening strong preempt in s
