SAYC. A double is for penalties (1) late in the auction, (2) when partner has already described his hand fully, (3) when either partner
has redoubled earlier, (4) when either partner has doubled (or passed) for penalties earlier, (5) when the doubled bid is artificial, (6) when the doubled bid is a major-suit response to a preempt, or (7) when in otherwise
ambiguous cases, the doubler sits behind the initial bidder of the suit. SSS. A double is for takeout when it comes at the doubler's first opportunity to double the suit bid (or a 1NT response to an opening bid), or after a
raise of the suit and two passes, and the doubler's partner has not yet bid, but a 1NT opener cannot double for takeout unless sitting under the opponent who overcalls. Other doubles are for penalties. |
